Unit Summary

The Surgical Team at the Juravinski Hospital provides peri-operative care to a critical and acute adult patient population. In this exciting and dynamic environment, our team supports tertiary and regional programs providing both inpatient and same day surgery and is the host hospital for the Regional Cancer Centre.

Position Summary

The Registered Practical Nurse participates in providing peri-operative nursing care in accordance with the job description and competencies for Registered Practical Nurses in the Operating Room at Hamilton Health Sciences.

Schedule Work Hours

Days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, on call as required.

For on call shifts, it is required to be at the hospital within 30 minutes.

Qualifications

  • Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Practical Nurse
  • Perioperative certificate or equivalent Operating Room experience.
  • Current certificate and or has completed equivalent community college courses
  • Current Heart and Stroke Foundation course in CPR or equivalent
  • Recent within (2 years) relevant Operating Room experience in a tertiary care facility
  • Demonstrated skill and ability in site specific services.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, communication and teamwork skills
  • Demonstrates commitment to the principles of professional practice
  • Demonstrates judgment in carrying out his or her role or function and is responsible and accountable for acting on the interpretation of data
  • Demonstrates critical-thinking and decision-making in assessment and problem identifications
  • Demonstrates ongoing personal professional education and development

Proficiency in both Official Languages would be an asset.

Description:

As a Registered Nurse (RN), you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being.

In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families. You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance. You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

PLEASE NOTE: Provisional Permit Holders shall be paid $39.58 /hour - $54.16/hour. Upon being entered into the register of Registered Nurses, the rate of pay shall be adjusted to the rate of pay applicable to a Registered Nurse in accordance with AHS/UNA Article 25.02(b)(i) or (ii) as applicable.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support – Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). If you have not practiced as a Registered Nurse within the last five (5) years, completion of the following free courses is required: CRNA Medication Management – Chapters 1 – 4 (https://connect.nurses.ab.ca/home/%2Flearning-and-development%2Flearning-modules%2F) and the NextGenU Health Assessment Resources Certification (https://courses.nextgenu.org/course/view.php?id=271#section-0)

Additional Required Qualifications:

Connect Care, minimum 1 year OR experience, minimum 1-year acute experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Minimum 2 years OR experience, familiarity with ORNAC standards.
